In the novel 1984, George Orwell demonstrates a loss of privacy in Oceania caused by Big Brother. The relevance of this novel to today’s society is how the people of America are losing their personal privacy every moment of the day without even noticing their rights to freedom being lost. The US citizens have lost their freedom to their financials, choices of personal body use, and the ability to express themselves freely in everyday activities. These rights have been taken away by the American Government and surrounding peers. The people allow these problems to continue and can only be solved if together they all stand up as a whole.
All around financial freedom is lost. In Orwell’s writings of 1984 he demonstrates Big Brother giving the people of Oceania no financial freedom. They all had to work jobs that were paid equally, regardless of the occupation. Big Brother convinced the people that their income was enough and that the economy of Oceania was at its highest point. New pieces of literature were being replaced by the old to make the modern day of Oceania seem like their economy was doing great. One of those pieces altered history to this, “It was a dark, dirty, miserable place where hardly anybody had enough to eat and where hundreds and thousands of poor people had no boots on their feet and even a roof to sleep under.” (Orwell 72). Big Brother told the people of the Ministry of Truth to rewrite historical literature as their modern day. The people were replacing history with new facts that came from their society.
