Although it wasn’t the main reason Reconstruction ended, Northern neglect was still a significant problem. Neglect is the act of failing to care well enough. The North did not pay enough attention to what was happening to the freedmen. “Northern voters grew indifferent to events in the South. Weary of the ‘Negro Question’ and ‘sick of carpet-bag’ government, many Northern voters shifted their attention to such national concerns as the Panic of 1873 and corruption of Grant’s administration… the tide of public opinion in the North began to turn against Reconstruction policies.” (Doc C) The North got tired of trying to get South to help freedmen. They stopped worrying about the South and began to worry about their own problems. Northerners began to lose interest in Reconstruction and gave their attention to government scandals. The Panic of 1873 was when millions of people were losing their jobs, this was a great distraction. Rather than digging deep into keeping Reconstruction, the president and the civilians kept trying to get to the bottom of the scandals, when they do not realize that they fell into a bottomless pit.
