The Tonkin Gulf Resolution on August 7 Essay

America has gone through prosperity and depression as a country, but we overcome and grow and learn from our history to shape our future. During the course of 1965, Lyndon B Johnson set the stage for three years of legislation that completed the Domestic transformation of the United States which began three decades earlier with FDR’s New Deal, but would be overshadowed by an aggressive foreign policy driven by his support of containment and the domino theory. LBJ’s presidency underwent evolution as it progresses beginning as an extension of John F. Kennedy’s presidency and evolving into an aggressive, legacy of destruction and violence.Early in Johnson’s foreign evolvements he encounters many difficulties and lack of progress partially due to a confused and ineffective government in South Vietnam. Just like Kennedy, who was determined to pursue the fight against Communism around the globe and promising to “pay any price, bear any burden”, so was Johnson determined to accomplish his predecessor’s objectives stating: “let us continue” in Vietnam. Therefore, it is no surprise that “Johnson pledged to carry out the policies of the Kennedy administration”. Realizing the vast commitment needed to win the war Johnson searches for excuse to openly attack North Vietnam and not lose his elections in 1964. The answer: the Tonkin incident of August 1964, which he is able to exploit and convince congress to pass the Tonkin Resolution on August 7th giving him full authority and a blank check to wage war against North Vietnam. The Tonkin resolution marks the beginning of the Americanization of the war in VietnamThis “murky crisis”, where an attack on an American destroyer war reported, provided Johnson with the opportunity of convincin…

At first, Johnson continues Kennedy’s foreign policies concerning Vietnam, similarly supporting the idea of containment just as Kennedy did. However, after realizing the vast commitment it is going to take to win the war and being encountered by numerous difficulties and lack of progress, he eventually causes the U.S. involvement to become much deeper. Johnson was able to achieve this through the Tonkin Resolution, which gave him the power for operations such as “Rolling Thunder” and eventually an open-ended military commitment towards this conflict. The resulting domestic backlash originating by the war can still be seen today in the protests against the diminishing war in the Middle East baring reference to the foreign policies adopted by Lyndon B. Johnson.
