The Life of John Fitzgerald Kennedy Essay

John Fitzgerald Kennedy was the 35th President of The United States. He was more than just the Commander-in Chief to many. For those who admired him the most, he was not just their role model, he was also their hero. But, he was also the only Catholic to hold the highest office of the land. Many groups, especially the Protestants, were opposed to a Catholic president. They feared that the Vatican somehow would become involved in America’s matters, and the Constitution would be changed to make Catholicism the nation’s religion. John F. Kennedy need to show American votes that he could be loyal to both hi faith and the ideals of the Constitution. He worked hard to end religious intolerance and paved the way for future Catholic politicians to become possible candidates for president. He had, in doing this, the greatest impact on religion than any modern president.John F. Kennedy was only the second Catholic to run for president in the history of the United State (Denison). According to Jim Denison, “from the beginning of the campaign, his (Kennedy’s) Catholic commitment was a hotly-debated subject. The Southern Baptist Convention made clear its opposition to a Catholic president. Norman Vincent Peale opposed his candidacy on religious grounds. Billy Graham made no secret of his support for Richard Nixon.” Many Protestants opposed the idea of a Roman Catholic president because they were concerned that he might be controlled by the Catholic Church or might make Catholicism the religion of the nation (American President: John Fitzgerald Kennedy). According to Herbert S. Parmet, John F. Kennedy even felt that many Catholic Bishops were upset with him because they did not like either his opposition to federal funds supporting parochial…

…ity to communicate the right message. He paved the way for any American who aspired to lead the national regardless of race or religion.” Fifty years after his presidency, John F. Kennedy remains the only Catholic to have held the highest office in the United States (John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum). However, in the 2012 election, Mitt Romney, a Mormon, was a candidate for the highest office in the land. That would probably have been a dream fifty years ago.In order to win the presidential election of 1960, John F. Kennedy knew he had to show the American people that he could be loyal to his faith as well as the ideals of the Constitution. He did this through speeches and interviews. His hard work paid off. He was elected the 35th President of The United States and paved the way for others to follow. He hanged religion in America-maybe forever.
