The comparison between the rat and the soldiers on the battlefield has been the most disputative fact of the poem “Break of Day in Trenches” by Isaac Rosenberg. The soldiers are making trenches to fight through the war and sacrificing their lives to protect nationalism which is leading them to a dreadful death, where the rats are surviving fearlessly for not having cosmopolitan sympathizes against any nationality. Having a conversation with the rat is imaginary and comparing the rat’s liberal progressiveness with their power of surviving in the war. The significance of the rat in “Break of Day in Trenches” is the ability to survive in the war while the human can not because humans are even inferior to the rats in the sense that they make discrimination in terms of nationality.
