Stephen Hawking Essay

Stephen HawkingMost people have heard of Stephen Hawking, and many agree he has made a huge impact on the scientific community in the past 50 years, but just how much has he contributed, and how did he get to where he is now? Was Hawking disabled at birth, and what makes him unable to move or even speak? Has he always been so intelligent? What are some of his greatest achievements? In the following pages, all will be revealed on how Stephen Hawking arrived where he is today.Stephen Hawking was born on January 8th, 1942, to his parents Frank and Isobel Hawking. They lived in Oxford, England. He was the son of two very intelligent people, both of his parents graduated from Oxford University, and his father was a respected biologist. Despite this, they weren’t well endowed financially. “Hawking’s father always wanted him to go into medicine, but from an early age Stephen showed a passion for science and the sky” (biography.com). Hawking and his mother often spent summer nights together gazing at the stars, and it was always clear he was interested in space. “Although he was very intelligent even at a young age, Hawking was at times a poor student, spending his time out playing games, and even building a computer at age 16, instead of goingto class” (biography.com). Although Hawking wasn’t the greatest student, he would go on to study at Oxford at the age of seventeen. When Stephen Hawking got to Oxford, he was at an impasse; there was no mathematics program at the time. Luckily for him, Oxford did offer two subjects that intrigued him: physics and cosmology. (I think this was an important part of Hawking’s life, had Oxford offered degrees in mathematics, he may have never become such a well known and respected physicist. …

…as much time as possible to furthering his goals. He lived everyday as though it was his last, and now, in the end, he has a lot to show for it.
