Stephen Edwin King, one of the greatest horror writers of the 20th and 21st century, was born on September 21, 1947 in Portland, Maine. Stephen was born at the Maine General Hospital. He was the second son, and only son born from his mother, of the King family. Stephen had a older brother who was adopted two years prior to Stephen’s birth. Stephen, only being a toddler, his father, Donald Edwin King, left Stephen’s mother, Ruth Pillsbury King, leaving her to care for the family with the help of relatives. Stephen’s mother had moved back and forth from Fort Wayne, Indiana and Stratford, Connecticut to finally come to a decision and stay in Durham, Maine in 1958. The family was provided a small home from their relatives and was financially supported by their relatives. The times were tough on the King family, as their mother worked in a kitchen at a mentally challenged facility. (1)(5)Stephen King wanted to start writing even at the early age of 12. Stephen and his brother David began writing their own newspaper that they would sell for five cents apiece, titling their newspaper “Dave’s Rag”. David had enough money to buy mimeograph, to help Stephen and David print out their newspaper. (5)In Durham, Mr. King attended a grammar school, and later was enrolled Lisbon High School in Lisbon. In high school, Mr. King began his writing with his best friend Chris Cheesley. Stephen and Chris began to write for their newspaper in their sophomore year.
