Sherman Alexie

Sherman Alexie, in the article “Superman and Me” (1998), juxtaposes his unique experience as a Native American student with a thirst for knowledge, with the presumption of that most Native American pupils are not expected by society to have an interest in education or have the skills to learn. Working with this juxtaposition, Alexie argues that reading is a critical skill for success. Alexie’s purpose is to prove that reading was a way of saving his life, or preventing him from becoming a “typical” Indian child, in order to inform the non-Native American population of Los Angeles of the Native American Children’s experiences.
