Prisons serve to punish, rehabilitate and deter criminals from committing crime, whilst also protecting the community. However if not much action is put into actually rehabilitating these criminals, they are most likely going to reoffend. Contrary to belief, trying to punish criminals more harshly and adding more years onto their sentences only means that they will serve a longer time, rather than getting the help they need be able to adjust into society.
Those who commit miniscule crimes only serve small sentences and may not find problems in readjusting into society, however for those who must serve sentences for more than 20 years will struggle to adapt to society as they will not know how to.
