Initial assessments take place at the beginning of every year or at the beginning of a learner’s educational journey within a school setting. “Initial assessments should be carried out the same way for all learners in order for them to achieve realistic and fair results”. (Hillier, 2005, p62) The purpose of initial assessment is to identify the learners learning and support needs, the assessment process covers a wide range of information in order to paint a picture of the individual and the needs they may require. The initial assessments are held by the specific chosen school providers, throughout the process objectives may be set for the learner to try and achieve, and an amount of time will be given for the learner to achieve it in.
