Essay on Smoking and Lung Cancer

Oscar Wilde was quoted as saying, “A cigarette is the perfect type of a perfect pleasure. It is exquisite, and it leaves one unsatisfied. What more can one want?” Unfortunately, Oscar Wilde had no idea that smoking caused lung cancer. Lung cancer is one of the most preventable diseases that exist, yet people continue to voluntarily put themselves at risk, and it still has tragic effects on the person and their family even though there are ways to treat it. The disease itself is categorized into two types, but both are eventually fatal. The cancer has several causes, but is mainly due to smoking. It has many numerous effects, both physical and emotional. However, there are still treatments and options that can prolong a cancer patient’s life or even cure the disease.Lung cancer comes in two forms, known as small cell lung cancer or non-small cell lung cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, non-small cell cancer accounts for 85%-90% of all lung cancer cases (6). Its other form, small-cell cancer, is less common, and is more difficult to treat. Since it spreads to numerous places in the body, it is not usually treated with surgery. Knowing which form of lung cancer one has is vital, so they can know how to effectively treat it. It is also important to know the symptoms of this disease, so as to be able to check for it, and respond immediately if it is present. Symptoms of this disease include fatigue, cough, shortness of breath, chest pain, and coughing up phlegm and blood (“Lung Cancer”). Upon checking for lung cancer, a biopsy is most commonly used. The American Society of Clinical Oncology defines a biopsy as “The removal of a small amount of tissue for examination under a microscope” (“Lung Cancer”). I…

The cancer is recognized as being either small cell lung cancer or non-small lung cancer, and it is caused mainly by smoking, although there are other causes. It has numerous harmful effects on both the cancer patient and their family. There are, however, treatments to prolong the patient’s life and hopefully cure the lung cancer. Lung cancer affects more than two hundred thousand people every year, and many of those people die from it. In other words they are dying from something they could have easily prevented themselves. As time goes on, more people will hopefully realize how fatal lung cancer is and that they can protect themselves from it with the simple act of avoiding smoking and taking care of themselves, and will then influence others to do the same.
