A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens Essay

An inhuman sound disrupted my peaceful slumber. My eyes shifted slowly toward my clock. The red numbers confirmed my suspicion. “Ugh,” I thought to myself. “3:30 in the morning. This is going to be a bad day of work.” I pushed my blankets off of me and sat up in bed. To my left, the sheets were already pushed back and Marissa was nowhere to be seen. At first, I didn’t make the connection; I was too tired from working 12-hour shifts at the hospital and thinking was not my number one priority right now. With another intense day ahead of me, I wanted every second of sleep I could possibly take. I was about to fall asleep when the noise shook my soul again. It reminded me of a chain-smoker who suffered from emphysema. Now fully awake, I walked towards the bathroom. The noise appeared to come from there and as I approached closer, my heart began to race. Marissa was doubled over on the bathroom ground, surrounded in blood and moaning in deep physical pain. I quickly lifted up her body and held her in my arms. Her skin felt like fire as I held her up. She looked at me with glassy eyes and mumbled, “Rick, I don’t feel too good.” Little did I know that the terror was coming, (Gregory Chaff). The story, A Christmas Carol, tells of sour and sullen Ebenezer Scrooge’s ethical and emotional transformation as a repercussion from the mythical visits from his old companion, Jacob Marley, and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future. In this story, it brings the reader feelings of joy, warmth, and happiness. However, adjacent to those favorable feelings, the story also brings tarnishing images of despair, sadness, coldness, and death. Those dreadful feelings are displayed by the use of Tiny Tim’s childhood disease. During the Victorian …

… disease caused him many hardships. Like Marissa in Gregory Chaff’s short story, Disease Outbreak, Tiny Tim resisted the ferocity of his disease. Tiny Tim’s family puts in extra time and effort to help him because of his childhood disease just as Marissa’s husband did. Due to the disability, his family has to put forward much time and money toward helping Tiny Tim’s disease. Marissa is overcome with disease in one night as Tiny Tim was born with his. Regardless, both Tiny Tim’s family and Marissa’s husband put forth all that they can give to help save their loved ones. This paints the images of despair, sadness, coldness, and death. After all, childhood disease was a strong contributing factor in hardships and deaths. By showcasing these facts, Marissa and Tiny Tim are outstanding examples of how disease can bring hardships, despair, and in Marissa’s case; death.
