Athena was the goddess of wisdom

Athena was the goddess of wisdom, courage, inspiration, civilization, law and justice, strategic warfare, mathematics, strength, strategy, the arts, crafts, and skill. She was mostly known as the goddess of just war. She was often seen as companion of heroes and was the patron goddess of heroic endeavor. Athena was born from the head of Zeus, after a headache. She was born fully grown and in armor. She didn’t have a mother but it was said that Zeus swallowed Metis who had already conceived. You can say that Metis was her mother. Since Athena was Zeus’s favorite child, he trusted her to wield the aegis and his thunderbolt. Athena was feared by Ares, and all Greek heroes asked her for help and advice. One thing that Athena helped with was helping Hercules. When Hercules was required to drive away the stymphalian birds, as part of his penance, she brought them out, and he shot them.
One myth that the Greeks made up was the myth of the spider. There was this on women that lived in the city of Ledia, northern Greece, named Arachne. She was famous in her own for being a skillful weaver and spinner. A lot of girls came to her to see her weave. She loved boasting about how skilled she was. She claimed that she learned the skill on her own and that no one could weave as good as her. She said that she could go against Athena and win with ease. Athena heard this and got mad. She disguised herself as a old lady and came down and told her” My dear, I am old and have much life experience, so let me give you one advice: don’t ever mess up with a goddess! No mortal can compete against Athena. Take back your words and kindly ask for forgiveness…” Arachne got furious and said that Athena should come down and weave with her to see who would actually win. Athena at that point was really mad and transformed herself back into Athena. Everyone that was their to witness this bowed down. Arachne didn’t bow because she just couldn’t wait to compete against her. Arachne and Athena started to both weave. Arachne was actually good at weaving and her technic was perfect. In the end Athena won because she didn’t weave something that would disgrace the gods. Arachne weaved a scene showing the gods and goddesses weaknesses. Athena saw this and was really offended. She told her “You may be foolish and stubborn, but you seem to love your work. So go ahead now and spin forever!” She sprinkled her with the juice of magical herbs and Arachne was transformed into a small, ugly animal nowadays known as the spider.
