At the start of the play we can see Catherine is obedient and submissive, through the stage directions which state ‘she turned to him’ and ‘she got him a cigar’ However at this point Beatrice is in opposition to him over Catherine takin g the job at the plumbing company, so at this point Catherine is taking care of Eddie, through this Miller raises the question of whether Catherine is play g the role of a daughter or of a wife instead.
Her submissive attitude is also demonstrated through the stage direction of ‘she sat at this heels’ But this quote also illustrates that Catherine is quite child-like and naive.
