When I began my nursing studies several years ago I only studied in and familiar with traditional classroom. Now as a nursing student, because of my busy schedule, I embraced online learning to pursue my further studies in nursing. Online learning has allowed me to become a lifelong learner in my profession. Nursing informatics allow me to learn more about the advancement in technologies which leads to professional development.
First of all, I would like to give a brief picture on nursing informatics. Nursing informatics (NI) is the specialty that integrates nursing science with multiple information management and analytical sciences to identify, define, manage, and communicate data, information, knowledge, and wisdom in nursing practice. NI supports nurses, consumers, patients, the inter professional healthcare team, and other stakeholders in their decision-making in all roles and settings to achieve desired outcomes.

Even though social media may have negative effects such as breach in privacy and confidentiality, mistrust in health care professionals, loss of job/career, etc., it has also positive aspect if used properly. Social media can be a great platform for patients and health professionals to discuss on health topics which may provide emotional support, sense of connectivity/belonging, learning ground, provides a sense of community, medium to enhance organization and planning, etc.
In the summary, social media policy and course should be mandatory in nursing school and practice setting; nurse should have strong knowledge of law, CNO social media policies, organizational policy on social media use, ethical practice standards, and be accountable for unprofessional social media post.Nurses have an ethical responsibility to safeguard information obtained in the context of the nurse-client relationship. Today nursing informatics uses technology to improve its clinical nursing practice as well as to enhance the quality of patient care (Saba,2001).
Nursing is one of the most challenging and exhausting professions both physically and emotionally. Advances in technology in nursing are helping to make life easier for nurses. It is good to remember that, in our high tech world, the human touch cannot be substituted.
