Xhosa
• The Xhosa culture has a complex dress code that change with a persons social standing with features of beautiful beadwork and printed fabrics.
• Their main items of clothing include long skirts and aprons with embroidered fabrics, beaded necklaces called Ithumbu as well as beaded bracelets or anklets.
• The Iqhiya is a headscarf worn by married women
• Xhosa men wear things like animal skin and on special occasions embroidered skirts are worn that have a rectangular cloth on the left shoulder and strands of beaded necklaces
Ndebele
• The Ndebele tribe is well known for their brightly coloured geometric designs.
• The main element of girl’s wear is to wear a small beaded apron whilst older women wear aprons passes down from their mothers with thick beaded hoops around their necks, arms and legs.
• Married women wear longer aprons made of hardened skin, decorated in a geometric design as well as rings around their necks, arms and legs.
• All the girls and unmarried women do not cover their breasts
• Ndebele men wear animal skin aprons with animal sin headbands and ankle ands which is worn with a cape as well
Venda
• Girls usually wear a Shedo and a small apron to make sure there pubic area is not showing
• When girls go through puberty they wear Nwenda at the waist or around one shoulder which is made with brightly coloured striped fabric with beaded necklaces, bangles and hairbands
• Men and boys usually wore loin-cloth called tshindi which is a triangular piece of animal skin which is worn as a diaper
• in the cold weather the would wear a cloak over their shoulders
Zulu
• women would also wear different clothes for different stages in their lives
• single women wore their hair short with a skirt covered in beads
• engaged women would cover their breasts and grow their hair
• married women wear cowhide skirts that have been softened with animal fat and sometimes charcoal. Married women also wear circular-shaped hats called Izicolo which are made from grass and cotton to protect women from the sun
• men would wear animal skins and feathers
• royalty were the only ones allowed to wear leopard skin
• a front apron and rear apron are worn to cover the genitals and bum. Tufts of cows tail are worn on the upper arms and below the knees
