“They were careless people, Tom and Daisy, they smashed up things andcreatures and then retreated back into their money or their vastcarelessness or whatever it was that kept them together and let otherpeople clean up the mess they made.”

To what extent do you agree or disagree with these statements?

These statements are the only times in the book in which Nick Carrawaypraises Jay Gatsby or speaks down of Tom, Daisy and Jordan Baker.Throughout the book, he had been trying to keep Daisy and Gatsbyapart, so as to not hurt anyone’s marriage but now he didn’t careabout the three people of whom he described as crowd.

An important quotations supporting the fact that Daisy, Tom and Jordanare careless is; ‘I’m glad it’s a girl. And I hope she’ll be a fool-that’s the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful littlefool.’ This suggests that because Daisy has been living a rich life, all the sense has been knocked out of her. She doesn’t think thatwomen can achieve anything in the world but you just have to look atthe past two hundred years to see many women have done a huge amountof important things. However, Gatsby was careless at times and triedto make his dreams come true. “‘Can’t repeat the past?” he criedincredulously. “Why of course you can!”‘ this shows Gatsby’sdetermination to get Daisy back no matter who or how he hurt in theprocess. The following quote was used in a conversation in the carbetween Jord…

…e doesn’tworry about himself anymore. He tries to run the lives of the otherfour main characters in the book, Daisy, Nick, Jordan and Gatsby’s. Heis an antagonist in the story, he seizes his opportunity of marryingDaisy while Gatsby is doing his duty. He uses his money in the form ofa three thousand-dollar necklace to sweep Daisy off her feet and marryhim even though he knows very well that she is in love with Gatsby. Hetreats Daisy very badly and doesn’t really care because she couldn’tmake it in the world without him so he could do what he wanted.

In conclusion, I agree with the statements in the title because a lotof the time the characters show their vast carelessness. Jordan admitsit making her the bigger woman as so to speak. Daisy is very stubbornand wears white dresses to reflect this and Tom is hostile and treatspeople how he wants.
