To help every student in my classroom, I have to see them as individuals with different needs and backgrounds. I want to learn about their academic strengths and needs. It will be fundamental to be informed about the students’ linguistic background and primary language. One of the most important things I would like to know is if any of my students have difficulties speaking English and why the reason might be. I would like to know what language they speak with their family and friends. It would also be important to know what language their parent(s)/guardian(s) speak. Additionally, I would like to know if there is anyone at home that can support them with the English language. I would want to know how proficient the student is in speaking their primary language.
Additionally, I would try to acquire the California English Language Development Test (CELDT) scores of my students. I would also review other material from the previous year and if possible contact the teacher for more information about the student. Thus, guiding me through developing effective classroom instructions.
