This excerpt from the Foreword of Night, encapsulates Elie’s feeling after surviving the Holocaust. Upon entering Auschwitz, the prisoners were greeted by a Pole who told them to hold on to their faith while on the long road paved with suffering.
However, those words of hope proved to have no effect on them. Elie witnesses the murders and tortures of men and women and begins question his faith. He begins to ask himself how God could allow his chosen people to be slaughtered and cremated. Those moments in the camp contributed to the death of his spirituality and his desire to live.
