The Ego, the rational aspect of the mind, defines Ralph’s role as leader of the tribe. Ralph first step as leader is focusing on making a fire on the idea of getting rescued by a passing ship or airplane.
Ralph’s role as chief is to keep the members of the tribe civilized on the island. He attempts to build shelters for the tribe members. He attempts to keep organized meetings and uses the conch as a symbol of order. Ralph attempts to make strong helpful decisions for the good of the tribe. He always aims to keep the group together even though Jack’s constant attempts to break up the group. The ego has a bridge between the primitive needs of the Id and the moral good aspect of the Superego.

The ego is the only part of the mind that determines the unreality of the Id and reality. Ralph must look at different situations and determine which is the best option. Ralph is put into situations where he chooses between pleasing Jack or listening to what Piggy and Simon suggest is best. Ralph, as chief must try to be the better person and do right for the tribe although he sometimes get sidetrack to the primitive desires like every person.
