Many people yearn to join a class that has existed for many generations with set criteria. This criteria is intertwined with money, power and a persons upbringing in Society. While few in society join these exclusive clubs, others try to mimic the styles in order to have the acceptance of a very prestigious section of society. Although few succeed in joining, many are crushed, broken, and embarrassed for failing to enter what very few have. The people who mimic, ultimately show why they didn’t join because they didn’t fit in by floundering their insecurities or lack of experience. The Biggest reason why people fail in joining a class in which few are in, because one must be born into it. Therefore in The Great Gatsby, by F-Scott Fitzgerald, Gatsby fails to join the old money club because he exhibits his wealth to society.Gatsby possessions provides an indicator that he purchases items with eye appeal and flashiness which Old money typically never buys in order to impress or show off to others. They prefer to buy small non-noticeable items that skilled eyes will only know the true value of the merchandise. Gatsby on the other hand purchased a huge house with vibrant colors and a car that catches the eye’s attention. Gatsby surprises Nick with his “gorgeous car“, indicating to former that the latter purchased the vehicle with intent to impress others. The car has new money features because of the “rich cream color” on it couple with nick describing how beautiful and vivid it looks. Old money colors are white, bland, and not appealing, which Gatsby fails to grasp at the beginning of the book. This obsession that Marrying Daisy, will finally allow him to live the Dream of becoming old Money would never come life for the fact that he dealt in illegal activities to earn his wealth. The fact that one must be born into this social class, stopped Gatsby from the beginning because he grew up a poor farm boy in North Dakota. If Gatsby would have been born into a middle to upper class family, he probably would have chased this fantasy in the first place.
