The Frankenstein Diary Essay

Victor Frankenstein is the creator of a “monster.” Because of his thirst for knowledge, he goes too far and creates a huge monster, which he immediately shuns. This rejection plays a major part in the monster’s hatred and disgust for humans. When any intelligent life form is born or created, it normally has no feeling of hate, fear, or prejudice. Feelings such as these are instilled throughout life and the experiences one encounters. The monster had an early traumatic experience of seeing his “father” also known as his creator, Dr. Frankenstein, run at the sight of him. “I did not dare return to the apartment which I inhabited, but felt impelled to hurry on, although drenched by the rain which poured from a black and comfortless sky”(44). The feeling this most likely caused was resentment towards humans and society. The feeling of being abandoned and viewed in disgust by the person who created you would be awful. He did not know what he could have done to his creator that would have shocked and petrified him to the point of horror and disgust with his very existence. However, the monster remained benevolent. After leaving the site of his creation, the monster wandered for a period of time and discovered many things. He discovered fire. He learned fire created warmth and made most foods more palatable. The monster also discovered a small village where he obtained some shelter and food.Observing his neighbors for a long period of time, the monster notices that they often seem unhappy, though he is unsure why. He eventually realizes, however, that their despair results from their poverty, and hardship to which he has been contributing by habitually stealing their food. Torn by his guilty conscience, he stops stealing their food …

…ents Victor from returning to the island. In the morning, Victor finds himself ashore near a strange unrecognized town. Upon coming ashore, he is arrested and told that he will be tried for a murder found the previous night. Victor denies any knowledge of the murder, but when he is shown the body, he is shocked to see his friend Henry Clerval, with the sight of the monster’s dreadful hands on his lifeless neck. Victor falls into a feverish sickness until he is released from prison. The monster has been through an immense amount of betrayal. He has dealt with rejection from the beginning of his life and has been abused, abandoned, rejected, and shunned by everyone including the one who created him. His creator even denied him one faithful companion. The creature was a benevolent being, but throughout his life he transformed into a malevolent spawn of the devil.
