A social media policy is a code of conduct, which provides employees with information on sharing information about their personal lives or their jobs on the internet (Flynn, 2012). This helps employees to have appropriate behavior on social media platform as well as ensure that the employees do not share crucial information, which might lead to lawsuits or expose the organization’s private information to the public (Flynn, 2012). Violating a social media policy may lead to negative consequences on the responsible individuals which may include dismissal from the organization. However, for minor cases, there are some measures, which can be taken on the individual to prevent the individual from repeating the action (Flynn, 2012).
Based on this case, Tim can call a meeting where the server is called to face some of the senior members of the organization. This meeting is aimed at collecting more details on the action and what led to the server to take this action (Flynn, 2012). Upon explaining herself, the negative effects which could have been caused by this action should be analyzed and action taken on the individual which may include a warning from the senior member of the organization (Flynn, 2012). A written policy to address this issue going forward would include the need for best behavior when it comes to online and social media sharing of information. Different responsibilities should be identified to different individuals regarding social media and confidentiality and what action should be taken on individuals who go against the policy (Luttrell, 2019).
Responsibilities of an employer regarding posting work related information on social media include creating awareness to what entails as acceptable behavior and what is deemed as negative behavior in social media (Luttrell, 2019). This can be achieved by the creation of a social media policy to address what is expected of every employee and what consequences the employees may face in breaching this policy (Luttrell, 2019). Some of the policies at my past employer regarding posting to social media included employees not being allowed to associate themselves with the organization when posting on social media. Online posts reflect personal views and opinions of the individuals. It is also important to observe copyright and social media rules and regulations implemented by government agencies when posting online (Luttrell, 2019).
Negative content, which may cause harm to other individuals or the organization, are not tolerated. Any employee found in breach of this policy would face harsh consequences, which could include dismissal from the organization (Luttrell, 2019). The social media policy is an appropriate one as this prevents the sharing of crucial information, which may negatively impact the organization affecting its customer base. This policy is aimed at ensuring the best behavior of individuals in posting online (New Orleans Public Library, 2013). Without this policy, individuals may post private information, which may expose an organization’s strategies, which may affect its competitive advantage over other organizations. Irresponsible social media posting may also lead to liability, which may use an organization’s resources affecting its revenue and profit returns (New Orleans Public Library, 2013).
