Reconstruction was so wild that Abraham Lincoln would probably have lost some of his historically inordinate legacy that he received for the handling of the war. Andrew Johnson was incapable of working with Congress. According to the text, President Johnson lacked Lincoln’s political skills and instead exhibited a stubbornness and confrontational approach that aggravated an already difficult situation. In Congress, there were too many who were looking for retaliation to have a better plan for reconstruction. Nobody won the Reconstruction, it ended when Rutherford Hayes was elected and withdrew the last federal troops from the south, and the bayonet-backed Republican governments collapsed, thereby ending Reconstruction.
Lincoln’s priority was to re-unite the Union and would do anything to save it. If President Lincoln did nothing, the Union would be permanently separated and the war was to save the Union. He was playing Politics by trying to please majority of the population and not to free the Slaves. Lincoln realized that, the South would back down if there was the threat of freeing the slaves, hence the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. In a letter in 1862, Lincoln stated that everything he did with slavery, he did so to help save the Union.
Although he signed the Emancipation Proclamation that ensured freedom of the slaves, he doesn’t deserve the title “The Great Emancipator”. The slaves were not freed. In the debate, Lincoln-Douglas, Lincoln detailed his views how blacks were not equal in color and moral or intellectual endowment. He also believed whites were superior to blacks. This means, he did not believe in the Declaration of Independence which included all men.
