Hemingway – the writer of the Iceberg Principle”ReflectionIn this semester, my friends and I have completed the assessment after a hard-working time. The topic of the presentation is “E. Hemingway – the writer of the iceberg principle”. We tried our utmost to study, analyze this topic and do the presentation fluently. In fact, there are many things that arise in the process of making this presentation.

Indeed, this presentation has brought me many experience and the knowledge about Literature in particular. As a member of our group, I together with two other friends began to prepare for this presentation few week ago and if time came back, I wish we could do better than that. As I said above, the topic of the presentation is “E. Hemingway – the writer of the iceberg principle”. To be honest, I was little nervous when our group was given this topic due to his “hard-boiler” but “terse, limpid, vigorous, compressed prose” style(Kwon, 2015).We decided to do this presentation in an easy way that anyone seeing it can understand what we intend to say. The first thing we do was embarking the main parts of our presentation.

After many discussion, there were two significant areas presented, which is the Biography of Hemingway and his Iceberg principle in “The Old Man and The Sea”. As instruction of teachers, it will take 25-30 minutes for each group to present. Thus, we decided to divide our presentation into three parts. Biography, the Iceberg Principle and the Iceberg principle in “The Old Man and The Sea” after reading reference. Generally, all of members together completed the work in best way except for some problem of our slide that we forgot stating the objects.I was in charges of the second part. During the process of searching, it is difficult for me to find the document exactly and useful on the Internet.

Besides, it is sometime hard to understand the author’s language and what he meant. If there were once more chance,1 I would try my best to spend more time finding other source such as books, magazines, radios, etc and studying them more carefully. As a result, I was not confident in my part of the presentation and something happened. It appeared to me that it was disappointed performance due to the bad preparation. During presenting, I forgot some main point and hardly use any body languages.

In addition, I failed in engaging the audience. According to University of Leicester (2009), attracting the audience’s interest by fully consider their needs would help presenter more confident in presenting and successful in goal. Indeed, my performance was not good as I expected. Although I described slides in the most understandable way, audiences seemed not very interested because of my lack of confidence.

Hence I realized that confidence is one of the most essential factors in addition to preparation. Planning a presentation carefully made the presenter more confident and that confidence made the presenter shorten the way to success. If only I had realized this and done better. However, chances were hard to come again. Therefore, instead of complaining about the weakness, I would overcome them.

Since the presentation, I had waited for feedback from the teacher to evaluate my performance more clearly. Indeed, the feedback of my teacher was what exactly I think about the performance of our group in general and mine in particular. It seemed to me that this feedback was very useful for me to improve my skills. In addition to weakness I mentioned above, the teacher showed me the poor use of stress and intonation. As a language student, it is essential for me to surmount this weakness.

This presentation made a chance for me to explore my weakness clearly and receive valuable experience.Apart from experience, I had learned a lot about Literature from making this presentation. As I said above, the topic about Ernest Hemingway drove me nervous at first but then reading materials made me understand more about the context and2 “Iceberg Principle”. He was a strong influence on English fiction in 20th century and had started his writings since high school. In my opinion, an event that marked a milestone in his life was the Word War I. In 1918, he became an ambulance driver to server Europe Red Cross and got a hard leg injury in Italy; He was healing in Milan then he got a chance to acquaint to a nurse of American Red Cross named Agnes; They plant to marry but unfortunately that wedding did not take place (Daniels, 2017).

At that time he was severely injured in both mental and physical health. He began to recognize the negative effects of war and started becoming a writer. This also affected a lot on his novel meanings.

Referring to Hemingway, people will refer to short simple-language novels that have a hidden meaning and do not forget the “Iceberg principle”. According to this principle, you can see only one part floating on the surface of the iceberg, while the other parts are under the water- the hidden meaning is not, but you have to self-contemplate (Handlee, 2015). If you do not have enough knowledge or experience, you will feel the novel boring and non-meaning. In fact, Hemingway always used simple structure, short dialogue and hardly described characters directly in his novels. On behalf of the “Iceberg Principle” is the novel “The Old Man and The Sea”.

Through the image of the old fisherman chasing the swordfish, Hemingway draw the beauty and power of human in a hardship journey to make any difficult come true (Bushy, 2016). Likewise, every things in our life has two side: once on the water and once under the water. It is essential that we apply this principle on many aspects of real life.

After the presentation. I also understood more about this principle that it brought many meaningful features for the story of the novel although I felt it was hard to be interested in it at first.Overall, to reflect all the process, one thing that I learned is that preparation plays a significant role, influenced throughout the process.

If time came back, I would try my3 utmost to prepare my reference carefully and my performance would become perfect. Great experience and knowledge from this module as well as the presentation about “Iceberg Principle of E. Hemingway” help me complete my skills.

In the future, it is essential that I apply all these experience and knowledge to my study and work.4 Reference list1. Busby, J.
