Mussolini began leading Italy in the beginning of World War 1 and is considered the trailblazer for fascism. His first role in Italy was prime minister in 1922 and he lead the paramilitary fascist movement, that promoted the fascist regime. Mussolini continued to maintain his control over society by inciting violence on those who opposed of his fascist ideology. The Fascist state ruled Italy violently, demonstrating its negative power and spread into society through internment, physical assaults, economic deprivations, intimidation, prejudice, and other forms of force. With the use of his paramilitary, Mussolini was able to “…destroy trade union headquarters and drive Socialist and Communist officials from office” (Trueman).
