(English Oxford Shorter Addition 1993) described motivation as being,”aˆ¦The action or an act of motivating something or someone. Thestimulus, incentive, motives for action towards a goal, resulting frompsychological or social factors; the factors giving purpose ordirection to behaviouraˆ¦.”

(Kent 1994) described motivation as being, “aˆ¦ the internal state whichtends to direct a person’s behaviour towards a goalaˆ¦.”

(Woods, 1998) described motivation as, “aˆ¦motivation has been seen ashaving two aspects: it is what drives us to do thingsaˆ¦and it makes usdo particular thingsaˆ¦.”

These various descriptions of motivation are putting across all of thesame points. All three statements involve an inner drive to a specificgoal. These goals are achieved through arousal and the direction ofthe athlete’s behavior.

There are various types of motivation such as intrinsic, extrinsic, primary, secondary, positive and negative motivation. Intrinsicmotivation is a term used to describe the internal drives that allowsthe athlete to perform. Intr…

I believe that there is no best method of motivation a coach orteacher can use on a performer. This is because when you start aparticular sport, you do it for fun, but gradually as you get betterrewards begin to be offered. Thus resulting in the performersmotivation coming more from extrinsic than intrinsic motivation. Ifthe performer wins a competition it will have a positive affect onthem intrinsically as well as extrinsically, as the performer willfell good about the reward as much as he feels good about how mucheffort was concerned in obtaining the reward. There has to be abalance, as if it is to extrinsically motivated their will be noenjoyment competing in the sport, therefore the performer will getbored and quit.
