More than often we are “blinded” by the dominating culture and can’t see past it. We focus more on the norm of our society as a whole that we can’t see beyond the categories such as race, religion, ethnicity and the societal customs. The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transexual, Queer community is a part of those minority groups who often get overlooked, as their rights aren’t always considered by the majority. Even though we know its a current issue and one that’s been seen throughout history we just keep ignoring it hoping it will go away, without taking much action. Taking out the possibility of diversity to the extent that one cannot be whom he or she wants to be or identifies as. Homesexuality is often considered a “taboo” that doesn’t accommodate with what’s considered normal, making heterosexuality the only pathway deemed okay by societal standards. This genereally creates dissaproval or retraction against the LGBTQ community so they often experience discrimination, and are forced to put on a label and are constantly criticized and evaluated by societies eyes.
The LGBTQ community and activists work tirelessly to ensure equal representation and full acceptance by society. This community provides a safe place or a home to those not represented or those who don’t sexually identify oneself or associate with the heterosexual mass. Discrimination is frequently inflicted against those represented by this group, they’re often shamed, called names, bullied, harassed, physically assaulted and sometimes they’re deemed socially inferior to “straight people.” Despite all the discrimination there is still some who assist, endorse and help maintain the community. These venture’s weren’t in vain because we have seen remarkable success over years. Thanks to efforts of many, support for the community has grown over the years. So there has been an arise in the percentage of people who think same sex marriage should be legal.
There were many people who worked towards full acceptance from society for the community and one of those activists was Harvey Milk. During his time being gay was considered a psychological problem, so many gays were forced to hide how they really felt. One of these people was Harvey Milk. He was aware of his sexual orientation since high school. His background and knowing how it felt to “stay in the closet” really gave him a insight to how thing really were and this would going to help him later on, in his fight for gays. Throughout the “wake of the emerging gay rights movement.”, he chose to be conceited, and kept low about the situation he “stayed in the sidelines” while the wake of the gay reform movement came to the light. Eventually Milk became “a visionary civil and human rights leader who became one of the first openly gay elected officials in the United States when he won a seat on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1977.” (Milk Foundation) Milk came to be an inspiration and gave hope to those around him, to be who they are. This quote by Harvey Milk “It takes no compromising to give people their rights. It takes no money to respect the individual. It takes no survey to remove repressions.”demonstrates how he felt and how he thought people should see one another.
Homosexuality is not a default. People most often view homosexuals as a disgrace to society and are often shunned or looked down upon. Over time the Gay community has been victims to verbal abuse, physical threats and attacks, which may also include harassment from the victims family. However throughout the years we have seen drastic changes in views. Harvey Milk was one of many who contributed for the cause and made an impact. He gave hope to those who were represented by the group and was an inspiration to many more. He triggered a feeling in those who were hiding from themselves and their feelings and those who chose to disguise themselves and or hide behind their masks
