Macbeth’s story begins to unravel in the fifth act. The three witches prophecies have come true in strange ways, Lady Macbeth is being eaten alive by the guilt inside of her, and Macbeth has come to realize his ideas were absurd and it is too late to fix them. Lady Macbeth has been having episodes of crazy. She began to sleepwalk and talk in her sleep. She believes that her hands are covered in blood and continuously tries to wash them off but there is nothing actually there.
In act five scene one when Lady Macbeth is sleepwalking, she says, “Out, damned spot! Out, I say!” Shortly after, Lady Macbeth is found dead in her chambers. In act five scene five, she is pronounced dead to Macbeth, “She should have died hereafter. There would have been a time for such a word. Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow Creeps in this petty pace from day to day To the last syllable of recorded time, And all our yesterdays have lighted fools The way to dusty death.

Lady Macbeth and her husband had a great love but he has become so emotionless because of all the awful things he has done, he does not know how to react when he hears this news. He realizes that since she is now gone he does not have a reason to live along with the demise of his power. In his soliloquy Macbeth states that life, “is a tale Told by an idiot full of sound and fury, Signifying nothing.” With his wife dead and Malcolm, Macduff and their army approaching his castle, Macbeth has essentially given up. Now, to him, everything is meaningless. So if everything is, “Signifying nothing” then all the horrible deeds he has completed are also meaningless.
