The American Dream is a concept that anyone, regardless of theirbackground or financial status, is able to pursue and full-fill theirpersonal goal. More often than not it was a financial goal, howeverthere are others, which include community, happiness, love and thecloseness of family. America is thought of as a place where dreams cancome true. Maybe because of its vast land and financial opportunity.Around pre 1900, there was mass immigration from all parts of Europeso that appears to imply that the people from around Europe believedAmerica was the country of opportunity at the time. From 1915 to 1925,there was the period of time for the industrialisation and growth ofAmerican cities. Also around that time, there was an increase in moneyand wealth that attracted people all over the world. However manyyears later from 1929 to 1941, America experienced the GreatDepression. The Great Depression was the period of time when there wasmass unemployment and millions of Americans were living in poverty.This meant for many people at that time, they could not achieve theirAmerican Dream.
Of Mice and Men was written in 1937, seven years after the start ofthe Great Depression. I presume that the Depression must haveinfluenced this novel. Steinbeck was a controversial novelist becauseof his support for the underprivileged, and he had had experience ofworking on ranches. Of Mice and Men deals with a range of characterswho all have dreams.

In conclusion, loneliness in this book is like a disease. George hadLennie to and Lennie had George to fight the terrible affects of it.But there were others who were not so fortunate, like Crooks who wasintensely unhappy, unconfident and seriously mentally damaged from thelasting affects of loneliness. Curley’s wife was killed essentially byloneliness and it was that that made her talk to the ranch workers andLennie which lead to her death.Loneliness is a part of human nature and companionship was what thecharacters strived for or lacked in and had yet to achieve.Companionship was the common dream. Companionship was what George andLennie had and which all the other characters wanted.
