George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four Essay

Curiosity and Anticipation

After reading the summary of the novel, the first thing that I was interested in was the dystopian society that the story was taking place. I wanted to know what conditions people living there were enduring and how much power the government had on those people. I wanted to know from what kind of society, the author George Orwell was trying to warn the readers and why. I was also excited to find out how the protagonist of the novel, Winston Smith, will rebel against them to achieve freedom and who will join forces with him. After reading the first quarter of the novel, I was surprised by the amount of power the government had on the people, and the strong monitoring system and rules they have put in place to prevent any kind of rebellious act. I was scared to even imagine if I lived in a society like that where I will be forced to always agree with the party in control and be monitored 24/7. …se now that he realized there isn’t any way to undo what has been done, he decides to continue with his rebellious acts against the party by continuing to write his diary and by having sex with a prostitute, which is illegal. The party, on the other hand, is trying to prevent any future rebellious acts by brainwashing the people with frequent videos or news on their enemies, by changing the history so that it always works in their favor, by constant monitoring or spying on people and with thought police that arrest a possible threat to the society before it grows and becomes even a bigger threat. Winston is fighting for his freedom and the party Big Brother is fighting against freedom. The purpose of this novel is to show what a Totalitarian society can cause to people and in which state the people have to live in if a Totalitarianism system is really put in place.
