Families and Intimate RelationshipsThe term “intimate relationship” is used to draw the distinguish between friends, sexual partners, family and kin. Whatever form they take, family relationships are a central feature of most of our lives (Wyse and Hawtin, 2000).

However, there has been a trend over recent decades for families to become less close than they were in the past and this situation is largely accepted in society. This report will discuss the reason, examine the benefits and drawbacks of this development.Article 1: “An evolutionary account of the prevalence of personality traits that impair intimate relationships”, (Menelaos and Apostolou, 2016). Personality traits such as low emotional stability and low empathy have a considerable negative impact on an individual’s mating success. This impact is more sever in cases where such traits reach extreme levels and are classified as personality disorders (fig 1.4). On the other hand, the mass media is also one of the reason for decline in closeness of families, because of the modern technology the young generation is more interested in their online life rather than interacting with there family members in their free time.

Before the recognition of customary marriages Act 120 of 1998, which came into operation on 15 November 2000, just a single type of close relationship was recognized -the civil marriage. The family law system consisted merely of the marriage Act 25 of 1961 and ancillary Acts regulating one type of intimate relationship. The preamble of constitution of the republic of South Africa, 1996 recognizes the different idea of the South African population and declares that we are “united in our diversity”. The constitution prohibits unfair discriminations on the grounds of gender , marital status, religion or culture, sexual orientation, amongst others.

The constitution provides the state with power to promulgate legislation recognising marriage in different religion, personal and family law system. As a direct consequence of the prevailing social order and the constitution a trend has developed to protect diversity within the south African law.Currently there are three forms of intimate relationships recognized by legislation in South Africa – the civil marriage, the customary marriage and the civil union
