Essay on Tom and Huck in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain

The Adventures Of Tom Sawyer

In the Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain, the friendship between the two friends Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer is strong enough to get them through some life changing adventures. The story takes place in the mid 1800’s, in a Missouri town called St. Petersburg. Tom Sawyer is a very mischievous, adventurous kid, living with his Aunt Polly and her daughter, Mary, and his brother Sid. In the very beginning of the book Tom shows how mischievous he is when he tricks a couple of town kids into painting a fence for him. He talks about how it’s such an honor and great fun to paint fences, so the kids quickly join in taking a brush. Huck Finn, however, has a different lifestyle, envied greatly by Tom, his best friend, as well as every other kid in town, because he is carefree and gets to do whatever he wants. Huck’s father is the town drunk and beats him often. For that reason, Huck is basically an orphan and sleeps where he wants, skips school, dresses how he wants, and does whatever he wants to do.Early in the book, Tom and Huck witness a murder at a graveyard, and the town tries to convict an innocent man of the murder, only they know the truth, and use their friendship to prove an innocent man innocent. Later, the friends find a haunted house where Injun Joe, the true murderer, and an accomplice of his are stashing treasure. Finally, Tom and his love Becky get trapped in a cave and Injun Joe is following them to kill them. This is when Tom finds the treasure, escapes, and gets rich with Huck. The friendship of these two characters can get them through anything. The main plot in this novel starts with Tom and Huck going to a graveyard where they find Muff Potter, the convicted murderer, and Injun Joe …

…the book and through their adventures grew stronger and more attached to each other. Huck remains the more mature of the boys, seeking adventure but making the adventure simple and real. Tom, however, chooses to make up false adventures and pretend games for all the other boys and himself just for fun. When Huck and Tom were stuck inside the haunted house with Injun Joe though, they were not concerned with pretend adventures, and stuck together and kept quiet. If either Huck or Tom had been alone, they might have cried or made some noise from being frightened that would have given them away, and Injun Joe would have killed them for pointing him out to the town as Dr. Robinson?s murderer. Being together, the boys got through the encounter and were able to eventually find the treasure, while saving more murders from happening, Muff Potter?s as well as their own.
