I think the statement ‘Marjorie thought the old mill was like aromantic castle, which symbolised their love as being something thatcould never be destroyed. Nick remained silent as he thought the oldmill was like their love in that it would eventually become a ruin’ istrue because Marjorie does say that the mill feels like a castle ‘Itseems more like a castle’ and I think that she is the romantic one intheir relationship because all the way through the story she ‘looks’up to him and does everything to please him. For example she asks himfor instructions – ‘Should I let it drop?’ Therefore, she wouldsymbolise the mill as a castle and their relationship is like it in away that it cannot be destroyed. She feels that the relationship isfine because until the day of their fishing she has had no reason todoubt this. However, Nick remained silent as he thought the old millwas like their love that it would eventually become a ruin. I believethat this is true because his whole intention for taking her out onthis particular say was to end their relationship. I know this becausewhen Bill, his friend, is introduced towards the end he asks if shewent ‘all right’ which suggests that he knew what Nick was planning todo which was to terminate the relationship.

…Hemmingway chose to structure the story in this way because itshows the start of the relationship, the life of the relationship andthe end of the relationship. Hemmingway has fully explained and givendetailed analysis and information about the couple to show the readerhow and why the relationship had come to a halt. However he hasbriefly explained this, but not explained why. I think he has donethis so that the reader can come to their own conclusion as to theending of the relationship and can have their own suggestions andtheory as to why it ended and how. He has presented all theinformation needed and left the conclusion up to the reader. I thinkthis is excellent because there are many different views and theoriesthat can come from this story, giving it a different twist to everyonewhich is why I think this story is for everyone’s pleasure.
