Francis Scott Fitzgerald both created characters that were wealthier than the other characters in their novels such as Tom and Daisy Buchanan, Jay Gatsby, and the Percy Washington and his father in a Diamond as big as the Ritz as well as Anson in The Rich Boy and even Mr. Fitzgerald has; exhibiting traits that set them apart from world. His characters disregard others around them not caring about the people they encounter and showing a lack of empathy for others, they have no contempt for their objects because they can simply replace them, thereby ascribing very little value to their things, and they go out their way to use money to cover up their mistakes. All these traits are found in real people according to Dr. Kenltner and Dr. Trout who study social interaction among the rich and poor; they’ve found a lack of empathy, contempt for their objects, and both question the ability of the wealthy to improve the conditions of those below them.The narrator in The Rich Boy describes rich and poor people in terms of types and kinds he ascribes the knowledge of being rich as setting them apart from their less wealthy counterparts. In recent years research has echoed the narrator in “The Rich Boy” says, “ Begin with an individual and before you know it you find out that you have created a type; begin with a type and you find that you have created nothing”(The Rich Boy). The narrator furthers on his monologue about rich people and states that being exposed to money in their childhood influences their perceptions thereby proving that the elite are different from those in the lower class for example Anson in the Rich Boy happens to be an extremely wealthy man in New York City who has conversations about his life with the narrator.
