Essay about Khorassan Silver Inlaid Bronze Jug Made in East Iran

In the East Iranian World apiece titled Bronze ewer inlaid with silver (Inv. No. LNS 118M), also called Khorassan Silver Inlaid Bronze Jug, was made in March – April 1205. The ewer is about 9? in. (23.1cm.) high. The ewer has a pattern of raised bands on it cylinder shaped body on top of its round base with grooves in it. It has a flat cylinder neck that is connected to a plain band at the very top. It has a simple loop handle that starts at the top of the ewer to the middle. Like the title says the ewer is bronze inlaid with silver. Areas of the ewer are slightly corroded with green. On the bands on the ewer is engraved the signs of the zodiac. It has a curved band of naskh below and a band of kufic above, the shoulder of the ewer is a on going band of naskh on the leafy vine ground. Naskh and Kufic are scripts for the Arabic language. “The kufic around the mouth reads: li-sahibihi al-ajall al-akhass al-muqbil al-muhtaram sadid al-din rafa'(?) al-islam w’al-muslimin ‘aziz al-muluk w’al-salatin (for its owner, the most glorious, the most excellent, the fortunate, the revered, [he who is] straight [in the path of] religion, …. of Islam and the believers, one who is dear to kings and sultans).” “karim al-‘asr mushfiq al-khala’iq Jayshi (or Habashi) b. Muhammad Maman(?) bi-tarikh sha’ban sana ihda wa sittami’a(?)(the generous of the time, the friend of [all] men, Jayshi (or Habashi) son of Muhammad Maman dated in [the month of] Shaban, the year six hundred and one). The naskh continuous band around the shoulder reads al-‘izz w’al-iqbal w’al-dawla w’al-‘inaya w’al-qana’a w’al-ziyada w’al-‘afiya w’al-dawama w’al-riyada w’al-kirama w’al-baqa li-sahibihi which means; Glory, prosperity, wealth, sympathy, contentment, abundance, health, …

…e ewer has in it. In better lighting you would be able to see the words and artwork of the zodiac signs on the ewer much better. Ewers by definition are just wide mouth jugs usually for people to wash in, but to me I don’t believe this ewer was made for that. I believed because it was a gift it was more of a prop, not made to be used. Looking at the ewer it just seems more of decoration to be functional.
