Essay about Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck

Did you enjoy reading The Grapes of Wrath? Why or why not?

From my point of perspective, The Grapes of Wrath was a tremendous and marvelous novel depicting the struggles the migrant farmers had to face, to the different characters experiences throughout the novel, and their ways they revolutionize through the situations present in the novel. It was all too shocking but also surprising especially in the conclusion of the novel. I personally favored this book both directly and indirectly. Some of the major events and details brought my attention to directly and indirectly is how the structure of the book in overall that Steinbeck puts in place for this setting and type of book this is, brought my interest too. When this novel was looked in a much broader perspective, I could see that the “Dust Bowl” description back in Chapter 1 really gives a picture of what actually happens in modern society and how people react to it. I just loved how that boost in the start of the storyline really brings your attention in the beginning from the depressing issue and the internal conflict of moving away from your farm because of such social and economic factors from the “Dust Bowl”. The “Dust Bowl” happens back in Oklahoma which is a dust storm that is destroying the farmer’s crops grown. Now they have no way to survive. And because of the unnecessary stress, such as this drought, the farming industry, human jealousy from others and overall fear, they all are forced to move out and into California in the 1930’s. This is totally similar to what happens in our country’s Midwest region, the tornado zone. Back in Joplin, Missouri a tornado ripped through giving pain to more than 116 people. In the novel “Dust Bowl’s” aftereffects are…

… of Wrath and adoring it so much is, because of its structure of the book, its special themes portrayed to each situation, and how certain characters are shown to change throughout Grapes of Wrath based on the conditions. Such historical context placed in time and such a positive depressing message given to the readers should be rewarded largely. No matter what, some migrant farmers forced themselves to get work even if they failed, they didn’t, because they just learned to try another option and work harder. That’s how Tom Joad and his family are united even though some reluctantly died and they accomplished their goal of arriving in California. A lot sacrifices were made and in general both happiness and sad times were shown. This is basically all the good aspects of this book which weighs a lot to make it a tremendous young-literature’s book, for me at least.
