Authors Purpose:
The author Ted Hughes wrote the poem “To Paint a Water Lily” for the purpose to describe that in order to paint a water lily correctly, and paint the complex natural scene, one must know of the chaotic unevolved nature and must follow his detailed instructions on how to paint the water lily. The author use imagery and has a distinct tone to show that nature is chaotic, unevolved and in constant motion and that paint a water lily and engulfing all those minute details would be difficult. The speaker tries to help the reader by giving them detailed instructions. He wants to show that nature can be peaceful and beautiful but extremely difficult capture, due to natures constant continuation and de evolution of nature.
