According to Shiel (2016), in a medical or biological context, stress is “a physical, mental, or emotional factor that causes bodily or mental tension and stresses can be external (from the environment, psychological, or social situations) or internal (illness, or from a medical procedure). “(p. 10). According to The American Institute of Strees (2015), there are a few symptoms and signs that show someone is facing stress, including frequent headaches, stuttering or stammering, fainter and more. If we have that signs, we need to overcome it immediately so that we do not have to face a worse situation later. There is a lot method to overcome stress.
To prevent ourselves get stressed, we should get some restful sleep to charging our energy. We use our physical and mental too much every day and it raises the pressure in our body and lastly, we will embrace the stress. We cannot get enough rest and sleep because we are too busy doing our daily activities. For example, we feel stress when we study for a long time and make us feel really tired and sleepy. From website SkillsYouNeed (2016), unfortunately though, stress also interrupts our sleep as thoughts keep whirling through our heads, stopping us from relaxing enough to fall asleep. We should be to maximize our relaxation before going to sleep to get better sleep. When we get enough sleep, we will gain better mood, healthier and most importantly we can avoid stress. By Barns (2017), if our body doesn’t get enough sleep, it can react by producing an elevated level of stress hormones, which are a natural result of today’s faster paced lifestyles. National Sleep Foundation (2018), recommended sleep ranges based on age such as for younger adults which is 18 to 25 years old should take 7 to 9 hours per day. There are some tips for helping us get a good night’s sleep by Tummers (2018), among other is scheduled physical activity to finish four hours before sleep time, minimize stimulating activities right before bed, avoid taking naps, do not get into bed until you are sleepy and keep our bedroom cool and dark. By following these tips, we can have quality bedtime that prevents us to get stressed. So, it is important to get enough sleep to overcome stress.
Furthermore, we also should exercise regularly to overcome stress. By SkillsYouNeed website (2016), stressful situations increase the level of stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol in our body. So, we can do physical exercise to be used as a surrogate to metabolize the excessive stress hormones and restore your body and mind to a relaxed state. We need to try to add exercise for a few minutes per day as a routine to our daily schedule. As an example, we can jog or walking or playing badminton or any activity that you into every evening just to make sure you sweat. According to Anxiety and Depression Association of America (2017), scientists have found that regular participation in aerobic exercise has been shown to decrease overall levels of tension, elevate and stabilize mood, improve sleep, and improve self-esteem. About five minutes of aerobic exercise can begin to stimulate anti-anxiety effects. We do not have to exercise every day, we also can take a break for a few days per week to get the rest. When we feel tense, we can go for a walk to get fresh air because it can help us calm. Regular exercise also will help us to improve the quality of our sleep. To make exercise as a routine, we can motivate ourselves with some exercise quotes such as “The reason I exercise is for the quality of life I enjoy.” Kenneth H. Cooper, “You have to exercise, or at some point you’ll just break down.” Barack Obama or “When it comes to health and well-being, regular exercise is about as close to a magic potion as you can get.” Tich Nhat Hanh. In short, exercise regularly helps us to overcome stress.
Other than that, we should avoid negative thinking. Edberg (2016), it starts with just a thought or a feeling, or maybe with a sentence spoken by someone else and then it starts to drag you down. Negativity that wells up inside of you or in the world around you can quickly become toxic and hold you back from living the life you want. To avoid stress, we should not over thinking and stop surrounding ourselves with negative vibes. When we face difficulty or problem, we should not ever thinking about that and try to solve it with the best way, but if we cannot settle it by ourselves, we can share our problems with someone that we believe such as our parent, sibling, friend or counsellor. This will help us to relax ourselves and avoid us from negative thinking. We should try to relax ourselves more by try relaxation technique such as self-hypnosis, SkillsYouNeed (2016). We can try a simple technique like focus on a word or phrase that has a positive meaning to us such as “calm” “peace” and “love” or we could think of a self-affirming mantra such as “I deserve calm in my life” or “Grant me serenity”. We will find difficult to relax at first because relaxation need to be learned, but do not worry, we will improve with practice. With relaxation skill, we will completely avoid negative thinking and have a more cheerful day afterward. Besides that, we also can try the other tips to overcome stress, such as a self reminder that people do not care that much about what you say or do, question the thought, replace the negativity in our surroundings, let it out and take it over and more tips that really help us to avoid negative thinking. Thus, to overcome stress we should avoid negative.
In the nutshell, stress is a common problem in modern life and causes a lot of pain and suffering to humankind. We will have a healthier life if we success to overcome stress like we practice ourselves to get more rest and quality sleep, doing exercise frequently and take positive and left negative thinking.
