One Example of a Nursing Intervention Related To the Disaster from Each of the Following Levels: Primary Prevention, Secondary Prevention, and Tertiary Prevention
Nursing plays an important role in providing effective interventions to prevent certain risks or threats, which may negatively impact the health of individuals (Smith, 2012). These interventions can be applied in times of disasters, which may include earthquakes and flooding. This was evident in the catastrophic earthquake in Haiti in 2020 where nurses played a major role in helping the victims of this disaster (Smith, 2012). One nursing intervention, which can be applied at the primary level, is health education where nurses can provide important information on how individuals can prevent harm if catastrophic events arise. This is important as it helps individuals in implementing preventive measures to protect themselves against specific disasters (Smith, 2012).
A nursing intervention, which can be applied at the secondary level, is performing tests on those injured to slow the progress of any injuries or developed health issues (Smith, 2012). Nurses can be adequately prepared in case a disaster occurs to respond to disasters immediately, which is important in minimizing the negative and long-term effects associated with the disaster (Smith, 2012). A nursing intervention, which can be applied at the tertiary prevention level, is the creation of a rehabilitation and support program, which is important in improving the lives of those negatively affected (Smith, 2012). Nurses can help these victims in the recovery process to minimize the impact of any illnesses or injuries, which may have been caused by the disaster.
Under Which Phase Of The Disaster Do The Three Proposed Interventions Fall? Explain Why You Chose That Phase
The three proposed nursing interventions fall under the four phases of disaster, which include preparedness, mitigation, response, and recovery phases to ensure an effective disaster management process (Baker & Cormier, 2014). The primary nursing intervention can be implemented in the mitigation phase, which involves planning and identifying resources to be used in managing the disaster. This is meant to reduce the impact and effects of a disaster (Baker & Cormier, 2014). The primary intervention can also be implemented in the preparedness phase, which involves planning on strategies to be implemented before a disaster occurs. Secondary interventions can be applied in the response phase where nurses respond by taking actions to save lives and prevent further damage to individuals’ health (Baker ; Cormier, 2014). These actions take place after a disaster has occurred. The tertiary nursing interventions can be applied in the recovery phase of disaster to ensure that affected individuals regain their health after a disaster has occurred (Baker ; Cormier, 2014).
With What People Or Agencies Would You Work In Facilitating The Proposed Interventions And Why?
There are different people and agencies that may provide assistance in implementing the proposed interventions due to their roles in the community. One of the agencies includes the Red Cross, which is a disaster management agency, which aims at assisting individuals who have been affected by certain disasters (CDC, 2018). This agency also performs other responsibilities, which include implementing measures to protect individuals from suffering in case of emergencies as well as provide support to individuals after the occurrence of disasters (CDC, 2018). The local government has also an important role in improving the health of its citizens and may provide financial as well as other important resources in the implementation of the nursing interventions. Due to the many and expensive resources required in disaster management, it is important to include the local government in this process (CDC, 2018).
