Continuing Professional Development is the process of assessing and documenting the skills, knowledge and experience that an individual can gain during his career. CPD helps individuals setting future goals and objectives. CIPDs HR Profession Map (HRPM) is a useful tool to help every HR member with CPD process.

HRPM sets out standards for HR practitioner, defining skills, knowledge and behaviours required to be successful in an HR or L&D role. The map consist of 4 bands, covering from the start of an HR career (Band 1) throughout the most senior level (Band 4). This bands illustrate the contribution that HR members make at each phase of their professional life. The HRPM includes a specific part focused on eight different behaviours that a professional needs to fulfill his functions regardless of the professional area. Those are:Curious: Promotes a continuos learning along with an approach which leads to new ways of thinking, innovation and overall improvement. Shows an original, analytic attitude that helps him to really understand and solve big issues inside the organisation. Decisive thinker: Shows ability to maintain a wide view of the situation, analyzing information from different sources and making connections.

HRPM defines 10 different Professional Areas: every area in the map is described in terms of knowledge and skills required throughout the four bands of professional competence. The areas Insight, Strategy and Solutions and Leading HR are the two core professional areas, namely applicable to every HR professional, despite his band or role in the organisation.

Insight, strategy and solutionsBroaden his personal knowledge being constantly up to date in terms of trends and innovations locally and internationally. Develops a deep understanding of the organisation while creating a wide network with specialists inside and outside the company (specialists, colleagues, executive communities of practice). Manages data in order to find out potential opportunities or risks for the organisation. Uses insight to influence colleagues and leaders’ decisions and collaborate with them to develop ideas and strategies.
