Assignment 1 What are the pros and cons of welfare

Assignment 1
What are the pros and cons of welfare? A question that we all would like to know. In my opinion welfare can be very beneficial to some and then welfare isn’t beneficial to others. I say this because in my opinion welfare is/isn’t abused, some people are struggling and need the assistance while still working a minimum wage job just, so they can make ends meet simply because the minimum wage job just isn’t cutting. Then there are others who don’t want to work and like to reap the benefits of being on welfare. That’s something that isn’t fair while others are trying to do right and not cheat the system. Sometimes when the system is being abused it ends up making it harder for the ones who do need the assistance. It’ll be harder for them to get on assistance and once it’s hard for them that can make them go out and do illegal things just, so they can earn some income. I honestly think that the qualification’s to be on welfare should be a little bit stricter and it won’t be so easy for some people to abuse the system. Then again, this system can be a little difficult to deal with either way. The system will always have its pros and cons.
Looking into to chapter one on table 1.2 Comparison of Different Ideologies it shows an understanding of liberals, radicals, libertarians and conservatives. It shows exactly how the groups have similarities and how they differ as well. Starting on comparison of different ideologies. Views of causes of social problems conservative emphasis on personal and cultural beliefs, libertarians are unclear, liberals more emphasis than conservatives on environmental factors while radicals environmental factors generated by monied interests. Views of human nature, conservatives and liberals were relatively optimistic. However even though they both are optimistic they both feel this way about different kinds of people. Conservative is relatively optimistic about affluent people, less optimistic about poor people. As liberals is relatively optimistic about poor people but less optimistic about rich people. Both seem alike yet differ. Liberaltarians favor policies that maximize the liberty of all people. While radicals pessimistic about monied interest, but optimistic about other people. When it comes to attitudes toward abortion and other moral issues conservatives are divided, but a significant faction favors government controls. Libertarians dislike government regulation of social matters. Liberals and radicals both have a oppose, yet on different perspectives. Liberals usually oppose restrictions on abortion but favor restrictions on drugs, while radials often oppose restriction of social matters. Core Values conservatives liberty, though some government incentives and regulations are favored. Libertarians is liberty as well, and liberals is liberty, but social justice is also important. All are all upon agreeing with liberty while radicals have social justice only. Conservatives and libertarians for nongovernment and governments programs all have similarities to one another. Conservatives favor nongovernment initiatives libertarians favor nongovernment initiatives. Liberals favor a mixture of both, and radicals favor government programs, but often recommend worker or citizen inclusion in government decisions. Taken a good look at the link that was provided to read for a good understanding between conservative and liberal beliefs Liberals believe in government action to achieve equal opportunity and equality for all. It is the duty of the government to alleviate social ills and to protect civil liberties and individual and human rights. Believe the role of the government should be to guarantee that no one is in need. Liberal policies generally emphasize the need for the government to solve problems. Conservatives believe in personal responsibility, limited government, free markets, individual liberty, traditional American values and a strong national defense. Believe the role of government should be to provide people the freedom necessary to pursue their own goals. Conservative policies generally emphasize empowerment of the individual to solve problems. Now that it’s a clear understanding the ideologies can be explained and understood better.
Now that it comes down to which of these philosophies may work best for social workers? I believe that they all work, but they work out depending on what the cases may be. Going back to what was previously said about liberals and conservatives. Being that liberals are all for assistance when it comes to the government helping individuals out most of the values would work in a social workers favor. On the other hand, being that conservatives believe that individuals should be dependent on self themselves and not as much on the government. It may be a bit of a challenged for the social work order I believe. However, both liberals and conservative can both tie into one another even though they both have differences. They can both benefit for the individual. I don’t believe just because liberals want the government to support individuals for a long period of time makes the individual maybe helpless to themselves. Even though some individuals can’t really help themselves liberals is definitely a great help. It’s a great thing for them to get a step forward in getting on their feet so they can eventually support themselves. Once an individual is at that point then they will fall under the category of the conservatives where that induvial does become very self-reliant and will no longer need the assistance from the government. Not to say conservatives don’t care about helping individuals it’s just possible that they don’t believe an individual should receive assistance forever but will do what they can to help.
When it comes to what changes I would recommend when it comes to the immediate future regarding social welfare policy. A change I would recommend is public assistance programs the support has been limited accessibility to the low-incomes families. Welfare should create some opportunities for families and individuals to upsurge and flourish through involvement within the economy. Our social welfare policy can improve more. I see others who deal with these issues that’s listed above daily. Some of them need assistance and can’t get it. That brings me back to the opening of this paper when I said, “welfare can be very beneficial to some and then welfare isn’t beneficial to others.” Don’t get me wrong welfare will be helpful to people who do need it and others who don’t need it are using and abusing the benefits while someone out there is struggling. I think qualifications can be a little bit better. Discussing welfare can be a touchy subject to some because we can all feel a certain way about it. Things will always change when it comes down to welfare whether we agree upon changes or not. We can’t say who should and shouldn’t receive the assistance, but there’s always room for improvement when it comes to the system.
