Animals all around the world are abused on a daily basis by people that don’t care for them. There are very few people attempting to protect abused animals.
More attention should be on the treatment of animals because even if we do have laws to protect them, many people don’t follow the laws. The laws that are already in place should be enforced more because I do believe that animals need a bill of rights. Animals are used in lab experiments, some harmful and some of the experiments aren’t harmful at all. We have cured mice of cancer for decades and it simply didn’t work in humans.” If this experiment isn’t helping humans in any kind of way, why do we keep trying the experiment on mice? I feel that the harm that is committed against animals should not be minimized because they are not considered to be human. There are experiments that don’t harm animals, instead they just observe them.
In the article “A change of heart about animals” by Jeremy Rifikin talks about an experiment that demonstrates an harmless experiment. “In controlled experiments, scientists at Oxford university reported that two birds named Betty and Abel were given a choice between using two tools, one a straight wire, the other a hooked wire, to snag a piece of meat from inside a tube.” The birds weren’t harmed or forced to do anything through the experiment.
Humans have a long history with using animals for sport or some type of entertainment. When you go fishing or hunting, do you ever stop and wonder these animals feel pain? In the article “Hooked on a myth” by Victoria Braithwaite, Braithwaite says “Do we really know whether fish feel pain or whether they suffer—or whether, in fact, our gut sense that they are dumb, unfeeling animals is accurate?” She then talks about how fish have nociceptors around their mouths, meaning they do have necessary sensory wiring to detect pain. When it comes to hunting quick kills are rare, and many animals suffer long painful deaths when hunters injure but fail to kill the animals. Some animals suffer for more than fifteen minutes before dying. Also loud noises from the rifles they use during the hunting process can disrupt mating and cause the parent animals to flee their dens leaving their offspring vulnerable to predators.
