The setting is described in the first paragraph. It talks about wherethe Torres family farm was located. It is located about fifteen milesbelow Monterey, where we previously talked about and where most ofSteinbeck’s fiction took place.

In the first sentence, it tells us they lived not far away from acliff and it describes the surroundings-the brown reefs and thehissing white water. The place Steinbeck described, was of his nativeregion of Monterey Bay

Then in the second sentence, Steinbeck tells of a stone mountainbehind the farm. Steinbeck is actually describing Torre Canyon(beforeknown as Tores Canyon) which was located near Monterey Bay, whichrelates to the name of the “Torres” family.

In the third sentence, Steinbeck describes the farm house they livedin. It gives us the feeling that it was old, and been through a lotthrough the years.

Lastly, the setting described by Steinbeck was overall peaceful andnice. This was the mood Steinbeck had developed during the beginning.
