A stab wound is a form of penetrating to the skin that results from a pointed object that is, “deeper than it is wide”. While typically stab wounds are commonly caused by knives, they can also occur from basically anything that has minimal surface area at a point and can have a large amount of force applied to it. The extent of stab wounds can vary but they are far more dangerous than lacerations as cuts can heal faster as less layers of skin are damaged unlike stab wounds. Death from a stab wound is most often caused by organ failure or blood loss. Treating a stab wound can also be quite tricky as it will require surgery in order to heal. The surgeon must also track the path of the wound and figure out what anatomical structures of the body are damaged, if major blood vessels or organs are damaged the condition of the patient will be critical.
