“A good stance and posture reflect a proper state of mind,” said Morihei Ueshiba. A successful relationship whether professional or personal starts with the foundation of communication. Invariable, one significant way in which speaking differs from writing is that when you are speaking, you have the opportunity to use your body to communicate. When we communicate with others, we express our thoughts and feelings both verbally and nonverbally by using our facial expressions, gestures, eye contact, posture, and tone of voice. Body language is recognize as an integral tool that can clarify and give a clear precise meaning of opinions, thoughts and feelings. The ability to understand and use nonverbal communication can connect individuals to other thus building a better relationship. During the process of communication, what comes out of our mouth might be different from the signals of our body. When these signals intertwine, the listener is hesitant to choose whether to believe verbal or nonverbal cues.
The power of body language includes various aspects, which consists of our everyday physical behaviors and activities: the way we talk/greet individuals, how we stand, how we sit; and the way we position our hands. Individuals can communicate without the aid of a single word. However, it is stated that action speak louder than words. A shoulder shrug without a single word means you have said, “I don’t know.” We can raise our eyebrows, and you have just said, “Excuse me, did I hear you right?” Our bodies help us to reinforce what we are saying and why we are saying it.
Body languages can help us discern the type of pattern people prefer to express their emotion or thought. Getting a rapport makes it easier for us to create a relationship of trust and emotional connection. In addition, the rapport must underlie three main components: physical mirroring, communicating in the same style and verbally matching their interest. Individuals have distinctive learning styles/patterns. This learning style will help us as humans to influence our ability to socialize, and perform academically in life. During communication, we have a specific way of absorbing and processing thoughts. We may learn through visual stimulation, responsive to sound while others may learn more quickly through touch. However, we can broadly classify individuals into three categories based on their preferred learning style during communication: the lookers, listeners, and touchers. You can identify a looker by their visual eye movement, their clothes as well as their speech. Lookers have the tendency to stream pictures running inside their mind. Sparingly, lookers will dress in bright and use words that are very descriptive relating to pictures in their head. It is important that when communicating with a looker use their approximate speed tone and manner. As it relates to a person that is responsive to sound (Listeners) it is noticeably that they are attuned to sounds and rhythms. Furthermore, they speak slower than persons who have a visual sensation. Listener have a rhythm or variation in their tone. In order for individuals to bond with listeners, they have to get in tune and reply with a rhythm. Touchers are naturally emotional people. Gestures are their main source of communicating with others.
In order to adjust your behavior to a person who use various distinctive pattern you must be able to analyze their body languages. For instance, if you are communicating with a looker, they use visual stimulations and they will always be attentive while talking. This may make a listener feel interrupted meanwhile a listener who tends to look away while speaking may make a looker feel unappreciated. If you are in an argument and your friend whose a toucher moves closer to get reassurance, you will notice that he/she is not invading your space. Once follow you follow their sensory and gesture preference; just give them a hug, they will find it easier to feel good again.
